Diversity in casting for major TV projects continues to soar to new heights. Every major network has added shows with more diverse casts and African American leads to its line up and it’s proving to be ratings gold. African American actors and actresses seem to be benefitting the most from the more inclusive casting; now receiving roles that for decades they were turned down for.
VH1has tapped into scripted program as well with the successful show Hit The Floor. The network has decided to build on its momentum and has greenlit another show with a predominantly black cast called Daytime Divas. Accomplished Actress Vanessa Williams(Soul Food, Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives) and Survivor’s Remorse star,Tichina Arnoldwill star in the upcoming show.
The project is based off a book former The View co-host, Star Jones, wrote called “Satan Sisters.” Industry insider website Shadow and Act laid out all the details about the project. It is an hour-long scripted drama series that centers around 5 women who host a popular daytime talk show “The Lunch Hour.”
Williams will play “Maxine,” a Barbara Walters type character. She is the creator and host of the show. Tichina Arnold, Chloe Bridges, Camille Guaty and Fiona Gubelmann will all play her co-hosts of the talk show. Hit The Floor’s McKinley Freeman will play Williams’ son and producer of the show.
Jones said all the characters are fictional, but are inspired by people she has worked with throughout her career. The series will delve into what goes on in front of and behind the scenes of a daytime talk show.
Williams will likely bring the diva attitude and villainess characteristics that we will live for and Arnold is sure to light up the screen with her sassiness and comic relief. This project seems like it is shaping up to be one to watch. It is slated to premiere in 2017.
