An on going struggle in Hollywood today is that there is a lack of faces of color gracing our movie and television screens. The struggle for equality in Hollywood is real and has been a battle fought by many. The latest actor to throw his hat in the ring is “Star Wars” actor John Boyega.
John recently sat down for an interview with GQ magazine where he expressed his thoughts on this touchy subject. In particular, John set his sights on HBO’s popular drama “Game Of Thrones”. John told GQ,
“There are no black people on ‘Game Of Thrones’. You don’t see one black person in ‘Lord Of The Rings’. I ain’t paying money to always see one type of person on screen…because you see different people from different backgrounds, different cultures, everyday. Even if you’re a racist, you have to live with that. We can ruffle up some feathers.”
Boyega has experienced racism in Hollywood first hand due to his role in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”. Many people were unhappy with John’s appearance in the movie trailer as a Strom Trooper. Fans and some critics claimed that there could not possibly be a black Storm Trooper, because they were all clones of the same white man.
Some feel that John’s statement regarding no black people on “Game Of Thrones” is not factual. Nathalie Emmanuel Jacob Anderson both identify themselves as being black. Also, there have been other black actors such as Nonso Anozie who have made brief appearances on the show.
Although faces of color are under utilized in the popular HBO series, there doesn’t appear to be any plans to make any changes. Faces of color are pretty much under utilized in all areas of media.
So, what are your thoughts? Do you feel like “Game Of Thrones” should add more black characters? What can be done about the lack of faces of color in Hollywood? Can anything be done about it? Let me know in the comments.
