Attacking Seasonal Skin Dryness

Glowing skin is always in-season.

Every winter like clockwork, my skin has a dry spell. No matter, what I do or what products I use, my skin continues to look dry and dull.

It’s difficult to maintain healthy glowing skin when the wind chill feels like zero. So, I did what I always do when I am in the midst of a beauty crisis, I went to YouTube. A quick search of skin hacks brought me to beauty guru, Zolee Griggs’ channel. In this video, she shared her tips for maintaining moisturized, smooth and even-toned skin.

What I love about Zolee’s skin hack is that it’s similar to the LOC Method for keeping your hair moisturized.

If you aren’t familiar with the LOC Method, it’s pretty simple. To keep your hair hydrated, this process uses three core products: a leave-in conditioner, oil, and cream. Layering these products from the thinnest consistency to the thickest provides a barrier that locks in moisture.

There are two key all-natural ingredients that make this skincare routine fail-proof: Aloe Vera and Coconut oil.

Benefits of Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera is one of my holy grail products because it’s a natural cure for dozens of skin concerns. Itchiness, sunburn, inflammation, and psoriasis are just a few of the skin conditions that Aloe Vera can heal. Packed with vitamins and minerals, this leafy plant helps with moisture retention.

Shopping Tip: Although classic aloe gel in a bottle can be purchased at practically any store, I like to pick up aloe plant leaves. Aloe Vera leaves can be found at health or global food stores for less than two dollars. When I am treating a skin irritation, I want it cured fast. By using the plant, you can get every ounce of nutrients that the leaves have so that you can heal faster.

Benefits of Coconut Oil

Much like Aloe, coconut oil can solve a number of skin issues. Coconut oil can be used to soothe eczema, rashes and even acne. It is also anti-fungal and anti-bacterial, which makes it an ally for your skincare routine.

Shopping Tip: When purchasing coconut oil, it’s best to buy a brand that is as pure as possible. Keywords to search for when purchasing my coconut oil include: cold-pressed, unrefined and organic. These terms mean that the oil is cooked at a low enough temperature to maintain it’s natural health benefits. It also means that the oil is produced without any additives that could compromise the authenticity of the coconut oil.

The Steps

Beauty guru, Zolee recommends that you follow this three-step process right after you get out the shower because it’s easier to absorb the moisturizers on wet skin.

To get beautifully glowing skin, the steps are easy.

  1. Apply the aloe plant gel all over your body.
  2. Soften the skin by moisturizing with coconut oil.
  3. Last but not least, seal in all the moisture with a creamy body butter or body soufflé.

For the last step, I like to use a body butter that has a subtle scent like the Tree Hut’s Moroccan Rose Shea Butter.
