The highly anticipated interview has now aired and I must say it was worth the wait!
“Bruce Jenner: The Interview” aired this past Friday on ABC’s 20/20 with Diane Sawyer and during the interview we got to learn about how Bruce came to the conclusion of being transgender, how it has affected his past marriages, kids, personal life, as well as finally hear him say, “For all intents and purposes, I’m a woman”.
The two-hour special pulled in major viewings with over 16 million people watching Jenner’s story – an amazing story I must say.
Bruce, a former Olympic track and field champion and who has been dubbed as the “greatest American athlete” opens up about how the female part of his soul is truly who he is.
“People look at me differently. They see you as this macho male, but my heart and my soul and everything that I do in life — it is part of me. That female side is part of me. That’s who I am.”
Bruce shared with Diane (and America) that during the Olympic training he trained so hard and so much to suppress that female side of him and as a child he grew up with gender identity issues and began dressing up in his mother and sister’s clothes when no one was around.
“I marked the closet so when I put it back I could put it all back, everything back in the exact same spot so I wouldn’t get caught. And, at the time, I didn’t know why I was doing it besides it just made me feel good.”
He even said that if he were to die tomorrow he would be so mad at himself for not exploring the female side of himself.
“I look at it this way—Bruce is always telling a lie. He’s lived a lie his whole life about who he is. And I can’t do that any longer. My brain is much more female than it is male. It’s hard for people to understand that, but that’s what my soul is.”
As the interview continued, Bruce continued to refer to himself with male-related pronouns, but kept going back and forth between “Bruce” and “her”. He says that for now male pronouns are ok until he reveals his new and true identity.
Bruce went on to divulge that during his marriages he shared his struggles with his now ex-wives. With his first wife, Chrystie, he says that after he told her about his secret she thought she could fix it and after two kids and nine years of marriage the couple separated moving on to his second wife, Linda, with whom he has two kids – Brandon and Brody Jenner. Bruce says after telling Linda, she couldn’t deal with it and the couple broke up after four years of marriage.
On to the famous head of the Kardashian clan, Kris Jenner, who surprisingly was not the first person to find out that Bruce struggled with gender identity issues, in fact he says it was Kim who found out first after catching him wearing a dress then his two girls with Kris, Kendall and Kylie.
He says that all of kids have been supportive, especially Kim, after Kanye helped her grasp how Bruce has been feeling, but says that Khloe is the one who has been struggling with it the most.
“They all cried. Mainly because they didn’t want anybody to hurt dad. They are very protective of me.”
Bruce says that he is back on female hormones (after taking them many years ago despite anyone knowing) and that he has had a few cosmetic procedures – including an Adams Apple reconstructive surgery to help him reflect on how he feels inside. Towards the end of the interview he takes Diane to his closet and shows off a black, sheer dress, which is fabulous!
This was an inspirational interview. With so many people struggling with this issue, it’s nice to see someone, of a famous caliber, openly and publicly discuss his lifelong struggles with the issue. Hopefully it’ll spark conversation about it and help those who do not struggle with gender identity understand what those who do are going through.
Good luck to Bruce and the future woman that he will be.
