Learn How You Can Lend A Helping Hand In Honor Of #GivingTuesday
First comes Black Friday. Then comes Cyber Monday. Finally, today is #GivingTuesday which is the best day of them all! After you’ve racked up on discounts towards your favorite things, it’s best to put those savings to good use by donating it to a great cause.
For those who may not know, #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.
Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving, according to GivingTuesday.org.
Last year, nonprofits raised $116.7 million on Giving Tuesday, more than eight times the amount in 2012, according to Manhattan’s 92nd Street Y, which launched the idea along with the United Nations Foundation. In the first year, 2,500 organizations participated, but by 2015 that grew to more than 40,000. This year there’s so many involved that Organizers have lost count.
This day of giving has ignited many people to give back especially those of high-profile philanthropists. This year, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will match donations made on crowdfunding platform GlobalGiving at 50 percent up to $1 million.
You don’t have to be a millionaire to make a difference. One of the best ways to get involved is in your own community. If you’re unsure of where you can help, GivingTuesday.org has created a directory to help you find organizations, charities, events and more in your own community to help you give back.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! So be of good cheer and find it in your heart to be charitable to the less fortunate. After all, isn’t that the true reason for the season?
