The way Hollywood is literally booming with talent these days and giving young Black entertainers the spotlight, is nothing short of AMAZING! From the young entrepreneurs getting their shine on to the music artists who speak volumes on their tracks. Today’s #bae is no stranger to speaking his mind – a force to be reckoned with in the Entertainment industry and never one to back down from controversy, rapper Kendrick Lamar is our #CelebrityCrush for today!
Compton rapper Kendrick Lamar is probably best known for his explosive lyricism. At just sixteen years of age, Lamar released his first full-length mixtape “Youngest Head Nigga in Charge (Hub City Threat: Minor of the Year)” back when he went by the stage name K-Dot. That mixtape led to Lamar securing a recording contract with Top Dawg Entertainment, also known as TDE, a newly founded independent record label based out of Carson, California. After receiving major cosigns from other big names in the music artists such as The Game, Lil Wayne and Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar released his third mixtape in 2009 titled ‘C4’ which was heavily based on Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter III LP.
& while we all know Kendrick Lamar is not afraid to speak his mind he’s been getting mixed reviews as of lately for his new track “Humble” as well as his latest album “Damn”. The album has yielded both positive and negative reviews for its racy content with messages of colorism, empowerment and self love of Black skin. Kendrick Lamar is the West Coasts’ Nas and I am definitely here for it. I don’t know about you all but I love a man who can speak to me without preaching to me (yes I did subtly bite off of Common’s “I Used to Love H.E.R.”) And did I forget to mention his milk chocolate skin complexion? Good gawd that is a fine man!
