Nothing starts your Monday off right like Kontrol Magazine’s weekly #CelebrityCrush where we’re sure to get you swooning over one of Hollywood’s hot bodies and fresh new faces. Today, we’re shining our spotlight on actor Y’lan Noel, who plays the role of Daniel King on Issa Rae‘s new hit HBO show “Insecure”. Follow the jump to see why we’ve dubbed Y’lan our Celebrity Crush.
A native New Yorker, Y’lan was raised in the Southside Jamaica Queens section of the Big Apple and later spent some time in South Mountain, Georgia. When the time for college rolled around, Y’lan Noel enrolled at the prestigious Morehouse College with an undecided major. After receiving some well worth it advice from Morehouse alum Spike Lee, Y’lan decided to audition and transfer to NYU’s theatre program in Manhattan to study more intensively.
From there, Y’lan went on to star in several films including “The Spartan King”, “House of Another” and more recently “Insecure” by Issa Rae. The eight-episode first season of “Insecure” explores the black female experience from the perspective of the two female protagonists, Issa (portrayed by Issa Rae) and Molly (portrayed by Yvonne Orji). Career and relationship experiences are explored. Issa works at a non-profit that benefits middle-school students of color. Issa has a long-term relationship with Lawrence (played by Jay Ellis). Molly is a successful corporate attorney who has career success but difficulty with dating men. Y’lan guest stars in this series as a music producer and former boyfriend of Issa. The half-hour series explores social and racial issues that relate to the contemporary black experience.
Insecure is the show we in the African-American community have been waiting for since ‘Girlfriends’. (And sidebar real quick am I the only one who thinks Yvonne Orji looks alot like Jill Marie Jones, the actress who played Toni Childs on “Girlfriends”?) To be apart of that is amazing and definitely worth mentioning so Y’lan, we salute you brother.
