BlackGirlMagic is in full effect! We are living in a world where black women are walking with their heads held high, making their dreams become reality.
In order to achieve this magical appeal, you must take your life by the boot straps and get down to business. This also means, being mindful of paying too much attention to those on the right or left of you, they may have no intention in going in the direction that you’re headed.
Kontrol Magazine had the pleasure of interviewing Tiffini Gatlin, Mother, Wife, Creative and Entrepreneur. At the age of 16, Tiffini’s passion for hair was born. “I began doing hair out of my mom’s basement to feed my passion for fashion and beauty”. Shortly after, she was introduced to a woman who at the time was looking for a few young ladies to show the ropes of hair braiding. During this time, Tiffini would walk one-mile there and one-mile back; she was determined. Blossoming into adulthood, Tiffini ventured into the world we all envision as the pathway to our passions and dreams.
It was Tiffini’s dream to become a lawyer. However, after college, she didn’t get accepted into Law school. After working in “Corporate America” for over a decade, Tiffini had the desire to test the waters of entrepreneurship. Once her mind was made up, the only person she needed to convince, was her husband. He was very supportive which made her transition seamless.
Soon after the big decision, Tiffini launched her own concierge service where she would be known as the “Atlgo2girl”. Being that Atlanta has a lot of ground to cover, Tiffini still managed to land TV, Radio host, Philanthropist, and Author, Rashan Ali as her first client. BIG DEAL! With no hesitation, Rashan trusted Tiffini’s vision. With “Atlgo2girl” concierge services growing, Tiffini decided to expand her brand into a blog. This blog served as an online resource for those looking for things such as, the newest restaurants in Atlanta or fun activities for children, she was the “Plug”. Sometimes, life has a way of placing you in a position that leads you to what your heart truly desires.
Wanting to fill the missing void in the beauty industry, Tiffini dove back into her days of braiding hair. She tapped into Crochet braiding, a style that has been around for years. The Crochet technique that Tiffini used involved dipping her clients hair into hot water to achieve the perfect curl… and as pretty as the curl was, it became too risky! An easier way of achieving these beautiful curls was what the hair industry was missing!
It was important for Tiffini to stay in her lane, she wasn’t interested in pushing bundles or educated in hair wefts, she was an expert in synthetic hair. With the hair market being as saturated as it is, it was very important that she be strategic in her planning. Tiffini’s ultimate goal was to create a beauty product that would change the way that women felt about beauty products as a whole. It was also important to “create a product that was safe, helped women save money and time”. In 2014, Tiffini filled a patent for her signature Latched and Hooked pre curled hair. It is important to understand that “Latched and Hooked is more than hair extensions, we are a beauty product line”. As an entrepreneur, it’s important to create your own lane; your own space.
Tiffini’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, “Find your passion, Do your research and Make sure that there is a real need for your passion”. Its is important to find and join support groups before you decide to go cold turkey and quit your 9-5 job. Lastly, make sure that whatever you consider to be your passion, make sure that if you had to do it for free, that you would be okay with that”.
Beauty products and hair extensions from this amazing line can be purchased at www.LatchedandHooked.com or if you’re in the Atlanta area, the signature pre curled and looped hair can be purchased from The Glamatory, located at 1675 Cumberland Pkwy SE Unit 408 Smyrna, GA 30080.
