Guess who recently celebrated his first Father’s Day! Earlier this year, actor Omar Gooding welcomed his first child into the world, with fiancé Mia Vogel. For the last two decades, he’s been Uncle “O” to his niece and two nephews, by way of big brother Cuba Gooding Jr. Now it’s his turn to be Big Poppa to his new son Omar Gooding Jr.; instead of just playing a father on television.
Though fatherhood is a new experience for him in real life, Omar has been holding down the role of a TV dad for the past six years. He plays Anthony “Tony” Stallworth on Bounce TV’s sitcom Family Time. Tony is a hard working general contractor, who heads a family of four which includes a wife and two kids. In the show, the family gets the surprise of their lives when they win the lottery. Now they’re adjusting to their new lives in the suburbs while dealing with a host of family members, friends, and neighbors.
Family Time has been praised for it’s positive and realistic depiction of a modern Black family. Like all real couples, Tony and his wife Lisa, portrayed by Angell Conwell, have their share of disagreements and disputes. But the high school sweethearts manage to stay respectful of each other and never forget that love is the foundation of their relationship. From time to time, they find themselves uniting against the wicked ways of their mischievous children, Devin and Ebony. Played by young actors Bentley Kyle Evans Jr. and Jayla Calhoun.
Ironically, Bentley Kyle Evans Jr. is the son of the show’s creator, Bentley Kyle Evans Sr. A well-known writer, director, and producer, who’s worked on other comedic television series like Martin and The Jamie Foxx Show. Now he’s the creator of two shows on Bounce TV, which include another sitcom called In The Cut.
With its fifth season premiering soon, Family Time has already been given the greenlight for Season 6. With each new season, the show gets increasingly funnier. Guaranteeing audiences the same comedic-drama that they expect from the Stallworths, and then some. Guests appearances for the upcoming season include gospel legend Shirley Caesar, Hip-Hop pioneer Kool Moe Dee, and a constant topic of discussion Tameka “Tiny” Harris of Xscape and T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle.
Omar has been a television and film actor since the early 90s. Mostly known for supporting roles in hit tv shows like Blossom, Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, and Smart Guy. Starring in films including Baby Boy, The Gospel, and the 1993 made-for-television movie The Ernest Green Story. He’s also made appearances in CBS’s Touched By An Angel, VH1’s Single Ladies, and UPN’s One On One. And took over the lead role of Calvin in the television version of Ice Cube’s popular film series Barbershop, which aired on Showtime.
However, no matter how much experience he’s had on screen, fatherhood is going to be his biggest challenge yet. Because as we all know, there are no breaks or re-takes when it comes to being a parent. And no matter how much you plan, no one is ready to deal with the terrors that come with teenagers. Fortunately for Omar, it’s going to be while until he has to encounter the thick of parenting.
Besides focusing on Family Time and his son, Omar is looking forward to his nuptials. Which he says will take place in the future as a destination wedding. Most likely, somewhere that requires a passport. He also has two projects that he’s been working on. One is a Sci-fi thriller that’s coming out in the fall, called Escape: Puzzle of Fear. The other is Do What You Do, a music-based television show that Omar will be hosting.
