Actor Kelvin Harrison Jr. has been putting in serious work in the realm of film and television for the last couple of years. He recently appeared on FOX’s new series Shots Fired, where he portrays Joey Campbell. An African American teenager who was tragically murdered. The series is being applauded for exploring crime and justice in America, especially when race is involved. Sounds familiar, right?

Kelvin is probably known best for his roles as Simon in the 2016 film The Birth of a Nation and Wilson in Roots, the 2016 remake of Alex Haley’s 1977 miniseries. He’s made appears on NCIS: New Orleans, Underground, and the 2013 film “12 Years a Slave”. He also stars in the television series “StartUp” which appears on Crackle; an online platform that distributes commercial free original content.

The 22-year-old New Orleans native grew up always thinking about acting. He went on to perform in high school plays and musicals. Eventually, he was able to convince his parents to allow him to pursue it as a career. Prior to being a full-time actor, Kelvin attended Louisiana State University for Marketing before transferring to the University of New Orleans to study Film. Unfortunately, the successes of his acting career eclipsed his education.

One could imagine how appearing in all of these films and television shows would stifle someone’s personal life. Fortunately, for Kelvin, his creativity and imagination leave him with no dull moments. He’s managed to tap into his artistic side during his free time with paint and coloring. He will even get down and dirty with clay art. You never know, Kelvin might be the next Jean-Michel Basquiat or Frank Morrison. Wouldn’t that be exciting?

There’s also an adventurous spirit in him as well, which compels him to try new things. Currently, he has decided to take up baseball and skateboarding lessons. He prefers these types of activities over traditional forms of exercise, which is also why he’s a black belt martial artist. Kelvin claims that he and the gym are far from close buddies. Luckily, he is blessed with a naturally thin frame, though he would like to gain some weight. However, don’t think he’s not eating. This young man carries around quite an appetite. Though Kelvin does admit that he has some poor eating habits that he needs to work on. Nobody’s perfect and no one said Rome was built in a day.

Out of all the things that Kelvin is good at, fashion and style may be the one area that he needs work. He subscribes to the “wear what’s comfortable” lifestyle, preferring sweatpants and dirty Vans over Tom Ford, Rick Owens, Gucci, and Alexander Wang. One of the perks of his occupation is he doesn’t have to choose what to wear to work. Actors get to wear costumes, so their work clothes or uniforms already chosen for them when they arrive.

Sometimes he tries to step out of the house looking fresh, however, he doesn’t feel the need to make it a priority. Kelvin confesses that sometimes require the help of his close friends to point him in the right direction in terms of style. But just because he doesn’t see anything wrong with wearing sweatpants to dinner doesn’t mean that he’s totally oblivious to style. Recently, a couple of men’s fashion publications stated that sweatpants are the new jeans. Maybe he’s been on trend all this time and everyone else has been behind. That or Kelvin simply goes at the same Wal-Mart that the rest of us shop at and stocks up on the Fruit of Loom sweats that are under $5. People fight over those sweatpants like they’re a big screen television on Black Friday.

More recently, Kelvin starred in a film titled It Comes at Night. It’s an American horror film that depicts what happens when a man and his family take in another family seeking refuge as the world is taken over by an unnatural threat. The film will hit theaters on June 9th of this year. After he was finished filming for It Comes at Night, Kelvin was able to return home to New Orleans to work a project called Assassination Nation. Not much information has been released about this project, except the fact that it’s about four teenage girls who receive attention worldwide after having their personal information leaked by an anonymous hack.

As he looks forward to more opportunities to grow, Kelvin is most excited about the prospect of playing a character who is above the legal drinking limit. It’s something he’s never had the chance to do since most of his career he’s been cast as teenaged characters. He has already been blessed with a good amount of success earlier on in his career. So, it wouldn’t be a stretch to think that he may have the potential to be the next Will Smith or Denzel Washington. We all know that time flies, so don’t blink or you may miss the rise of a magnificent star.
