Serena Williams Photo Sparks Pregnancy Speculation!
Serena Williams posted a photo of herself standing sideways with the caption “20 weeks” on Snapchat on Wednesday, then deleted it — prompting widespread speculation that the 23-time major champion is pregnant.Williams, 35, did not comment beyond the photo and two-word caption. “We have not been informed nor do we have confirmation [that Serena is pregnant]. We will let you know once we have further information,” the WTA said in a statement.
Serena Williams got engaged to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian in December. Williams hasn’t played since winning the Australian Open in late January. She pulled out of her next two scheduled events (Indian Wells and Miami) while citing a left knee injury. Her only other tournament this year was in Auckland, New Zealand, where she lost in the round of 16. Tennis’ next major event is the French Open, which begins on May 28.
If Williams is, in fact, 20 weeks pregnant, she would be due in early September!
The apparent announcement comes one week after Victoria Azarenka, the former world No.1 and two-time grand slam champion, announced she will return to the tour after 14-month layoff that included the birth of her son, Leo, in December.
Serena remains close to the all-time grand slam record held by Australia’s Margaret Court, whose 24 major titles were split between the amateur and professional eras. Williams will not be the first mother to excel on the tour.
Kim Clijsters was already a borderline Hall of Famer when she retired abruptly at 23, having won the 2005 US Open and spent 19 weeks atop the women’s rankings. But the Belgian was even better after a 28-month layoff that included the birth of her daughter, winning once more at Flushing Meadows as an unseeded wild card in only her third tournament back. That made her the first mother to win a major singles title since Evonne Goolagong Cawley at Wimbledon in 1980, setting the stage for a final act that included two more grand slam titles and a return to the No. 1 ranking.
Williams is one of the greatest American athlete’s active today, and is the highest-paid female athlete in the world. She won her first Grand Slam singles title at age 17 in 1999, and has spent more than 300 weeks at No. 1.
If the baby announcement is true then we can’t help but join in by saying Congratulations to Serena! I mean what else could be happening at 20 weeks right?!
