Throwback Thursday: Ghostbusters!

It is Thursday; you know what that means – Throwback Thursday! Today we are throwing it back to a classic (what’s new?). The 1984 American comedic, and kind of supernatural, film – Ghostbusters!

This original film written by Ivan Reitman was actually produced by two of its main actors, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. Aykroyd and Ramis along with Bill Murray played three parapsychologists in New York City who start their own business. Sounds pretty ordinary, except their business was one for catching ghosts – which Ernie Hudson’s character finds out when he joins in on it. In the film, we get to witness these men take on ‘clients’ who need their services in catching ghosts, and all of the crazy things they encounter while doing it.

Ghostbusters is definitely marked down in history as a classic film. At the time of its release it received a lot of positive feedback and grossed $295 million worldwide. It was nominated for two Academy Awards, as well as two Golden Globes. It was so successful, that a whole Ghostbusters franchise was made out of it, including a sequel ‘Ghostbusters 2’, animated series ‘Extreme Ghostbusters’ and ‘The Real Ghostbusters’, videogames and now a reboot that is coming out in theaters this Friday, July 15th!

There is indeed a big twist in the reboot, and if you haven’t heard already, it is that it is a female cast. That’s right, the characters once played by Murray, Aykroyd and Ramis will now be played by Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon; and directed by Paul Feig. This major change in Ghostbusters has caused a ton of controversy, mostly by those that were big fans of the original. Despite the reboot having a solid cast, it has not received the best feedback so far. This may be only because viewers are comparing it too closely to the original?
