Back in 2015, T-Boz and Chilli announced they would return to the studio to record their fifth and final album. Instead of signing with a major label to create it, the ladies asked their fans for help. Their huge fan base including superstar, Katy Perry, showed up in a big way. The campaign exceeded its goal of $150,000 during the first week and by the end of the campaign over $430,000 had been donated.
Fans expected the album to come out sooner, and caused some loyal fans to believe they had been scammed. But the groups’ manager apologized and explained the cause of the delay.
Diggins stated, “I could go in more detail, but the simple fact is that T-Boz and Chilli were inspired to make a record that they could be proud of and they would not settle for less and sometimes you cannot rush art.”
The upcoming album will be the group responsible for the hits “Unpretty,” “No Scrubs,” and “Waterfalls” first studio album since the death of the unforgettable third member, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, in 2002. Diggins said their fan-funded album has a tentative released date of June. If it is anything like the group’s self-produced biopic it is sure to be worth the wait and live up to fan’s high expectations.
