The Reality TV Curse

At 28, I have one friend that is married and happily married might I add. Unfortunately, marriage is a dying tradition and is often times rushed and not carefully considered, thus ending in very ugly and bitter divorces. We see it almost everyday, headlines of the latest celebrity couple to call it quits. If marriage is difficult for the everyday man, it always blows my mind why reality TV stars often find themselves showcasing every argument and disagreement on national television and then finds themselves in a nasty divorce.

With Sunday’s night episode of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, we were reminded just how brutal having your marriage on display for the world can be. Porsha Williams and Kordell Stewart seemed to have the perfect, fairytale marriage as they naively signed on as the newest members of the cast of RHOA. It wasn’t long before rumors of homosexually and chauvinistic behavior swirled around the couple, and either created issues in their marriage or exposed the ones that were already there.

There is no secret that keeping your relationship, (whether marriage, friendship and every other relationship in middle) between the two individuals involved, is the only way to have a lasting relationship. So why these couples continue to sign up for reality TV and destroy their marriages and relationships is beyond me.

If you take a look back on all the celebrity marriages we’ve witnessed on television, it is clear that there is a reality TV marriage curse: Jessica Simpson & Nick Lacey, John & Kate, Ice T & Coco, J-Lo & Marc Anthony, Taylor & Russell Armstrong, Camille & Kelsey Grammer, The Hulk & Linda Hogan, I could go on and on.

I guess everyone can’t be NeNe and Gregg and conveniently get back together!
